Craig Revel Horwood has revealed who he is most looking forward to seeing strut their stuff on the dance floor out of the new batch of contestants for the 2022 series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Due to launch in just over two weeks, the sparkling new line-up boasts 15 shiny celebrities ready to be put through their paces, including presenter Helen Skelton, Coronation Street star and singer Kym Marsh, Matt Goss of boyband Bros and Paralympic gold medallist Ellie Simmonds.

Craig, who is now the last original judge standing following Bruno Tonioli’s confirmed departure earlier this year, was put on the spot by Alex Jones on the One Show on Tuesday night – herself a former contestant.

Appearing alongside former Strictly pro and soon-to-be dad Kevin Clifton and former finalist Maisie Smith to publicise their new stage show, Strictly Ballroom, Alex launched into the Strictly chat, starting: ‘The line-up has been revealed, we have this conversation every year Craig, and here we go again..’

Anticipating her line of questioning with a laugh, Craig interrupted, ‘Oh who’s going to win it?’ while Alex finished: ‘Who’s your money on?’

The director, choreographer and seasoned professional was careful not to predict a winner outright, having seen none of the contestants take to the floor yet, but he did share one celebrity who he is excited to see throw some moves.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing Will, I’ve got to say,’ admitted Craig, picking out this year’s first contestant announced, actor Will Mellor.

‘I think he’s got a real charm about him and I think he’ll be able to bring that onto the dance floor,’ he added.

Craig went on: ‘I haven’t seen anybody dance but I just love the plethora of characters in here because they’re all so different and I think that’s what great about it.’

He also referenced the four new pro dancers joining the show’s ranks – swelling them to their greatest-ever size of 20 – who he described as ‘amazing’.

‘Of course I’m going to miss our old lot as well and Bruno of course and all of that, but things move on darling don’t they,’ he finished.

Earlier this year, two-time champion Oti Mabuse announced her exit as a professional dancer, followed by Aljaž Škorjanec.

The new pros joining for 2022 are Vito Coppola, Carlos Gu, Lauren Oakley and Michelle Tsiakkas, with all celebrity and pro pairings yet to be revealed.

Judge Craig also called this season’s energy ‘fierce’ as he said he’d been having ‘little sneak previews’ of some of the dances for this year, courtesy of Jason Gilkison, who is co-choreographing Strictly Ballroom as well as being in charge of the routines on the BBC’s flagship Saturday night show.

The One Show airs weeknights at 7pm on BBC1. Strictly Come Dancing launches on September 17 on BBC1.
