The Last Of Us Part 1 remake is finally arriving on PS5, with improved graphics but the same story – so is it worth the high asking price?

PlayStation exclusive The Last Of Us was immediately hailed as a modern classic when it was originally released on PlayStation 3 in 2013, with its vision of a post-apocalyptic America featuring some of the best, and most cinematic, storytelling gaming had ever seen.

The remastered version of The Last Of Us followed only a year later for PlayStation 4, with the the sequel arriving in 2020.

With a live action HBO series and a standalone multiplayer title also on the way, developer Naughty Dog has decided to remake the original game from the ground-up for PlayStation 5, but that decision hasn’t pleased everyone…

Will The Last Of Us Part 1 be released on PS4?

The Last Of Us Part 1 is only for PlayStation 5, as explained in our review of the game.

The Last Of Us Remastered is already available on PlayStation 4 and the remake features graphics the older console wouldn’t be able to handle, as well as features like DualSense controller support.

When does the Last Of Us Part 1 remake come out?

The Last Of Us Part 1 has been available for pre-order for a few months now but the official release date for the game is Friday, September 2.

You’ll be able to download it as normal from the PlayStation Store or buy the physical version from any typical games retailer.

Is The Last Of Us Part 1 remake coming to PC?

Naughty Dog has confirmed that The Last Of Us Part 1 remake will be released across both PlayStation 5 and PC, although not on the same day.

Previously, PC versions of PlayStation games have taken around four years to arrive but Naughty Dog has told fans to expect the PC version of The Last Of Us Part 1 ‘very soon’ after the PlayStation 5.

How much does Last Of Us Part 1 remake cost?

This is the real point of contention with the remake, since the The Last Of Us Part 1 is being sold as a full price game, with no recognition that it’s based on a nine-year-old title.

Sony has almost doubled the price to £69.99 for the Standard Edition, compared to £39.99 or less for the remaster (which is also free on PS Plus Premium).

Is there a special edition of The Last Of Us Part 1 remake?

There isn’t a physical special edition for The Last Of Us Part 1 but there is a Digital Deluxe Edition available online.

The Digital Deluxe Edition is priced at £79.99 (£10 more than the standard edition) but all it includes are early unlocks for items that are in the game anyway, with no unique content at all.

Are the bonus items enough to justify the Deluxe Edition’s price? (pic: Sony)

Here’s what extras The Last Of Us Part 1 remake Digital Deluxe Edition offers:

Two skill upgrades (Increased crafting and healing speed) A pistol and rifle upgrade (9mm reload speed booster and rifle clip capacity increase) Explosive Arrows Dither Punk Filter Speedrun Mode Six weapon skins: Black Gold 9mm Pistol, Silver Filigree 9mm Pistol, Rubber Tactical Shotgun, Sculpted Oak Shotgun, Arctic White Bow, Carbon Black Bow

Players that pre-order either the standard or Digital Deluxe editions will also receive bonus weapon arts and supplements to boost their equipment and skills, but again you can get those for free from just playing the game.

How is the Last Of Us Part 1 remake different?

Developer Naughty Dog has justified the remake of The Last Of Us Part 1 on the grounds that players will benefit from the game’s modernised gameplay mechanics, which have been made more consistent with The Last Of Us Part 2.

The Last Of Us Part 1 will also offer two graphics options on PlayStation 5: a native 4K option that targets 30fps and a dynamic 4K option that targets 60fps.

Another big plus of the game is that it also makes the gameplay more inclusive, with its expanded accessibility features borrowed from Part 2.

However, besides the enhanced visuals and DualSense support not much else has changed. In terms of gameplay, there are no significant additions and only minor new features like a speedrun mode, concept art, unlockable skins, and gameplay modifiers.

Is there a free upgrade for The Last Of Us Part 1 remake?

Sony has confirmed there is no upgrade path at all from either the PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 versions of the game to the PlayStation 5 remake. So the only option is pay full price.

The justification for this is that The Last Of Us Part 1 is essentially a new game, created from the ground-up, and not a simple remaster. It’s still the same underneath though, just with better graphics, and that’s why many fans are angry.

Does Last of Us Part 1 remake have the Factions multiplayer?

The Last Of Us online multiplayer mode Factions allowed up to eight players to compete with each other in maps based on rearranged versions of the game’s settings and was very highly regarded on the PlayStation 3 and 4.

The Last Of Us Part 1 remake doesn’t include the Factions multiplayer mode at all though, which is another, understandable, reason why fans are so upset. Especially as some have suggested it’s been left out purely so people will want to buy the standalone multiplayer game.

Why do some fans hate on The Last Of Us Part 1 remake?

When the news of The Last Of Us Part 1 remake hit, there were some very mixed reactions amongst fans of the franchise.

Since there are no major changes and no significant new content the remake has been deemed unnecessary by many, considering the remaster still looks and plays very well on PlayStation 5.

Except for some quality-of-life improvements the remake still unfolds nearly identically in terms of story and gameplay, and some fans are frustrated that Naughty Dog are not focusing on developing new titles, considering how long it takes to make them.

No one’s arguing that The Last Of Us isn’t still a great game but most remakes are made because the original has become outdated or difficult to play on modern formats, and that’s not the case with The Last Of Us.
