Richard Hammond has revealed he would be supportive of his daughters if they decided to find romance on Love Island, saying he believed they’d already been asked to spend a summer in Mallorca.

The 52-year-old, who became a household name on Top Gear with fellow hosts James May and Jeremy Clarkson, will be appearing back on our screens in The Grand Tour.

Ahead of the latest instalment of the Amazon Prime driving series, titled A Scandi Flick, which sees the boisterous trio test out cars on perilously icy Nordic roads, Richard spoke about whether he’d consider a stint on a reality TV show.

The broadcaster told Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘I don’t think I would want to do reality TV personally. I’m kind of pretty boring and I don’t need to show the world that.’

However, Richard, who is married to journalist Amanda ‘Mindy’ Hammond, with whom he shares two daughters Isabella, 21, and Willow, 19, said that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t approve of his children trying their luck on Love Island.

He explained: ‘I can’t stop my daughters doing anything they want to do. They’re 21 and 19 and terrifying and if they want to do something, they will do it. I don’t imagine they would want to [go on Love Island] to be honest.

Richard hinted that Isabella and Willow may have already been approached by ITV2 bosses, saying: ‘I think they’ve been asked.’

He continued: ‘No I don’t think they would, I think they’ve been asked, but I doubt it. That’s for them to decide. I’m not going to try and stop them doing anything.’

The latest The Grand Tour special, which lands on September 16, has already hit the headlines, with James, 59, hospitalised after a high-speed crash during the filming of the show.

James crashed into a tunnel at 75mph while taking part in a dangerous drag-style race and was fortunately given the all-clear after the incident.

Speaking about the terrifying accident, Richard joked: ‘It was quite nice for once to be on the other side of it. I decided it’s much nicer not being the one who has had the accident but being one of the ones watching. It’s a better idea. I think I might go that route in the future. I prefer it.’

He added: ‘I think selfishly I was more relieved than anything else that somebody had maybe taken the focus off me. Of course, we had a moment of a brief, fleeting concern for James but an overwhelming flood of concern for that fabulous car buried in a wall. It’s unforgivable.’

The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick is available to stream on Amazon Prime from Friday September, 16.
