The first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the brand new TV series from Amazon Prime Video, are finally here.

The prequel show, set roughly 5,000 years before the events of The Hobbit, boasts an impressive cast, featuring Morfydd Clark and Robert Aramayo.

In Metro.co.uk’s review of the first two episodes, Josh Stephenson said the show is (so far) ‘just about a billion dollars well spent’.

And there’s one character who, despite not making an appearance yet, has already got fans excited: Oren.

Let’s find out who he is…

While The Rings of Power is yet to fully introduce its lead antagonists and villains, many fans of the series have already worked out that Oren is going to be one of the main threats to our new friends in the show’s first season.

Posters of Oren that were published by Amazon in the run-up to the first season, which currently sits at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, don’t give much away. But many believe that he is an Elfish character that leads an army of Orcs.

Fans who analysed the teaser trailers in detail have spotted a dark-haired character leading a band of Orcs up a stone staircase. The shot is brief, but many fans now expect Oren to be the biggest threat in the series.

Is Oren in the books?

Many characters featured in The Rings of Power were not created by the book series’ author JRR Tolkien. For example, Lenny Henry portrays a Harfoot character named Sadoc Burrows, who never appears in works written by the late author.

And it appears that Oren is another invention of the show, having never appeared in the main Lord of the Rings book series or The Hobbit, nor The Silmarillion, upon which The Rings of Power is based.

Some fans are unhappy that so many prominent characters are not from the mind of Tolkien, but many are praising the series for introducing itself with a diverse cast and original characters whose fates and stories are yet to be decided.

Fans of Game of Thrones may recognise Oren when he finally appears in the show. Joseph Mawle, who will take the role of Oren in The Rings of Power, portrayed Jon Snow’s Uncle Benjen in Game of Thrones.

According to Mawle’s IMDb page, Oren is set to appear in the third episode of The Rings of Power, and every remaining episode of the first season.

Benjen appeared in the show’s pilot episode, but then went missing beyond The Wall shortly afterwards. In the show’s sixth season, Benjen was finally revealed to be alive when Brandon Stark and Meera Reed encountered him in the far north.

Unable to return to Westeros, he stayed beyond The Wall and sacrificed himself to the Army of the Dead in season seven, in order to save Jon’s life.

The Rings of Power is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. New episodes will drop on Fridays.
