James May opens up about ‘worst’ car accident of his life after crashing into wall at 75mph during The Grand Tour-Ruth Lawes-Entertainment – Metro

James May has revealed that a terrifying crash that saw him seek hospital treatment during filming for The Grand Tour was ‘the worst’ of his life.

The 59-year-old was trying to reach the highest speed possible in a one-way tunnel in Norway, attempting to beat the scores of Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond, when he plummeted into a wall.

After exiting his smashed-up car, James was taken to hospital and was fortunately given the all-clear by medics, resuming his Nordic adventures in the upcoming The Grand Tour: A Scandi Flick.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about the accident, the motorhead said it ‘was the worst car crash I’ve ever been in.’

‘I haven’t really had any of significance,’ he explained. ‘I genuinely haven’t.’

James continued: ‘When I was a youth I was in quite a few car crashes that other people had where I was just a passenger.

‘There was one roll-over in the field, one quite big collision and another roll-over on a country lane, but I was never driving. It was always some stupid mate of mine who’d overdone it.

‘So that was the biggest one I’ve I’ve ever had. But it wasn’t that bad. To be honest, It was just a bit of a bang.’

Explaining he had ‘forgotten’ about the accident, James joked: ‘To be honest, I’d forgotten about it until somebody said, “People will ask you about your crash”. And then I thought, “Oh, yeah, it’s a bit more than a day ago so, you know, I’ve forgotten [about it].”‘

Meanwhile, The Grand Tour executive producer Andy Wilman, who also worked with the car-obsessed trio on Top Gear, said he learned about James’ crash while, ironically, giving a security pitch.

Asked about how he navigates accidents as the show’s boss, he explained: ‘I was actually in a meeting on a Zoom call when that happened, being asked about security, safety procedures, insurance and how good we are at those things.

‘And I’m like, “We are absolutely s**t hot on safety. We’re your men.” Then the door bursts I’m behind me somebody goes, “James has just had a big crash.”

Andy continued: ‘It was funny in that moment. I then got down there and saw all the carnage. And then, as you would with a friend, no cameras, no filming, you go, “Right, s**t, what is James like?’”

‘And then you get into the whole business of we are still filming, we’ve still got a film and what moves do we then make as we don’t have the luxury of downing tools.’
