Eurovision star Sam Ryder took to the stage with Taylor Hawkins’ favourite band Queen to provide surprise lead vocals for Under Pressure at the tribute concert for the late drummer

Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen were introduced with Taylor’s son Rufus to play a portion of the concert alongside the Foo Fighters.

Ahead of leading the crowd in some of the band’s biggest hits, Taylor and co were introduced by Hawkins himself in archive footage.

The Foo Fighters drummer spoke of Queen icon Taylor’s importance to him in the video clip before the band arrived on stage.

Changing out guest vocalists for each song, The Struts’ lead singer kicked off with We Will Rock You before Roger Taylor took to the microphone with his soon Rufus replacing him on drums.

Taylor had previously dedicated his OBE earlier this year to Hawkins, following his sudden death on tour in Colombia, calling him ‘sunshine in human form’.

He also previously spoke of the close bond he shared with the star, as well as Hawkins’ role as a mentor to his son Rufus.

Dave Grohl explained they had been unsure about who should sing vocals for the next song they had planned before Taylor had ‘the bright idea’ and showed him a clip of the next artist singing.

He went on to say that it took just ‘one call and 20 minutes’ before he agreed to join the musicians onstage for the track at the show.

‘When we were talking about this next song to perform, we weren’t entirely sure who should come up to sing it with us, and I think it might have been Roger [Taylor] that had this idea.

‘Roger showed us a clip of someone singing along to this next song, and we made one phone call and within 20 minutes this person told us that he would come here tonight to sing it with us,’ the frontman told the audience.

Grohl then introduced Ryder, who bounded onto the stage with his usual energy – and in a trademark glittery jumpsuit.

Providing perfect vocals for Under Pressure, Ryder had the crowd singing along as he soared to those high notes of Freddie Mercury’s with ease.

Queen finished off their set with May singing in tribute to both Mercury and Hawkins.
