Pete Davidson is set to play The Ramones star Joey Ramone in an upcoming biopic made by Netflix, it has been revealed.

The comedian, 27, who stars on Saturday Night Live, will take the lead role in I Slept With Joey Ramone, based on the memoir of the same name by the late punk rocker’s brother Mickey Leigh.

Netflix have revealed the upcoming biopic is being made with the support of the late star’s estate and will be directed by Jason Orley, who previously worked with Pete on 2019’s Big Time Adolescence.

The biopic will follow the lead singer of The Ramones, who died aged 49 in 2001 following a battle with lymphoma and was announced on the 20th anniversary of his death.

The Ramones are often cited as the first true punk rock group and are credited with influencing a lot of music that followed.

Adam Fogelson, chairman of STXfilms Motion Picture Group, said of the movie: ‘When you share a bed with someone – and not just a bed, but a childhood, a family, and a lifetime – you know that person better than anybody else.

‘Mickey Leigh not only collaborated with his big brother’s band – he has irreplaceable memories of and insights into Joey Ramone, having supported him when no-one else would and witnessed him overcome adversity in the most dramatic way.

‘I Slept With Joey Ramone is a great rock anthem that will make an equally great rock biopic, set apart by a universal story of family.

‘Pete is perfect for this role and we’re excited he and Jason will be bringing this icon of rock to life and thrilled to be collaborating once again with our friends at Netflix.’

The film will not be Pete’s first foray into a Netflix rock biopic, as he also had a smaller role playing Elektra Records executive Tom Zutaut in the Motley Crue biopic The Dirt, which was released in 2019.
