Susanna Reid has congratulated Piers Morgan and said it was a ‘privilege’ to team up and hold politicians to account on Good Morning Britain after the programme was nominated for a Broadcast award.

After Piers, who quit Good Morning Britain last month, showed there was no hard feelings and reached out to the GMB team as their work was recognised for ‘Best Lockdown Programme’, Susanna praised her former co-star on Twitter.

She wrote: ‘Congratulations @GMB and @piersmorgan.

‘It was a privilege for us to continue broadcasting to people, many of whom were isolated, all of whom needed information and the government held to account at such a critical time.’

Before Piers sensationally quit GMB after his comments dismissing Meghan Markle’s mental health battle racked up a record number of Ofcom complaints, he was one of the most effective voices throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Love him or loathe him, his blistering takedowns of MPs on the programme was celebrated and needed with Boris Johnson and Conservative MPs noticeably avoiding Piers and Good Morning Britain throughout most of 2020.

Following his sudden departure from the GMB team, Susanna issued a statement to viewers, which didn’t sit well with Piers.

Recalling the moments after his exit, Piers opened up about watching a solemn Susanna read out a statement live on air, joking that ‘even my real ex-wife talks more fondly about me than that’.

This led to ‘an instant flurry of new texts’ from pals asking if they’d ‘fallen out’.

However, she has continued to defend Piers and he apologised to the presenter for his abrupt goodbye.

As for his next move, Piers has been widely tipped to join Andrew Neil’s upcoming news channel GB News, while ITV confirmed he won’t be replaced on Good Morning Britain. Instead, different names will join Susanna on the GMB desk.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
