The introduction of two LGBTQ+ polar bears on Peppa Pig has genuinely angered a far-right Italian politician.

A recent episode titled Families has received widespread praise for welcoming the two co-parenting lesbian polar bears, becoming the first LGBTQ+ characters in the series to date.

In the episode, Penny is sketching a portrait of her family along with Suzi Sheep and Danny Dog, when she says: ‘I’m Penny Polar Bear. I live with my mummy and my other mummy.

‘One mummy is a doctor and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.’

Subsequently Peppa Pig was hailed as a ‘gay icon’ and all in all, it was a very heart-warming moment in the fictional land of Peppa Pig.

Well, unless you’re Federico Mollicone, culture spokesperson for Brothers of Italy, a right-wing party expected to win the next general election in Italy.

While the episode aired here on on Tuesday September 6 in the UK to huge acclaim, Mollicone said broadcasting the scene in Italy would be ‘unacceptable’.

He told La Stampa, according to The Guardian: ‘Once again the politically correct has struck, at the expense of our children. Can’t children just be children?

‘We ask Rai, which buys the rights to the Peppa Pig series in Italy with a fee from all Italians, not to broadcast the episode in question on any channel or web platform.’

On the other end of the scale here in the UK, former Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb called for Peppa Pig to welcome more LGBTQ@ characters.

‘If we’re not, it still tells that teenager, who is struggling to come to terms with her sexuality, that there is something not quite normal about how they feel,’ he told Pink News.
