Great British Bake Off presenter Matt Lucas has fiercely defended the wholesome Channel 4 series after a troll slammed its diverse line-up.

Series 13 kicked off last night with cake week, welcoming 12 new bakers into the famous tent in a bid to impress judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

Hours before the show’s return, Matt reminded his followers that it would soon be back on television screens and tweeted details of when and where viewers could tune in.

However, one troll, irritated by the wonderful line-up of bakers, replied to the post suggesting: ‘Should be renamed the Great British Diversity Tick Box.’

Hitting back at the perpetrator, Matt simply urged them to ‘have a day off’.

In another tweet, he implored: ‘I don’t get you wrong, trust me’.

The first episode of the new series of Bake Off saw the newcomers tasked with baking 12 signature mini sandwich cakes for the signature challenge, using whatever sponge, flavours and fillings they desired.

In the technical round, they were instructed to create a red velvet cake with six layers in two hours by Paul, who described it as a ‘classic’ but reminded them to concentrate on their sponge and use of food colouring.

For the final showstopper challenge, the group had to make a 3D replica of a home where they have lived in which means something special to them entirely out of cake in four hours.

After all three challenges, Janusz from Brighton was the first to be awarded the coveted star baker title.

And sadly, it was the end of the road for former charity director Will after he failed to impress judges Paul and Prue with his ginger and caramel square signature and his final bake which recreated his former north London flat.

‘Someone’s got to go first and obviously I’m disappointed but I’m proud to have made it,’ he said.

‘There’s a lovely bunch of people I’ve met and I’ve got an experience that I can definitely talk about and share. I’m proud of that.’

Great British Bake Off airs Tuesdays at 8pm on Channel 4.
