The stars of Gogglebox became overwhelmed with emotion as they watched news coverage about the Queen’s death, with Mary dubbing the late monarch ‘incomparable’.

On Thursday September 8, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96 surrounded by members of the royal family at her estate in Balmoral.

Members of the public have been queuing for miles for a chance to pay their respects as her coffin lies in state at Westminster Hall, before her funeral takes place this coming Monday.

Last week, Gogglebox remained on air on Channel 4 on Friday evening, which viewers felt grateful for as they praised the channel for providing them with a ‘comforting’ watch following the sad news.

In the latest episode, they watched the moment broadcaster Huw Edwards announced the Queen’s death on BBC One, as Jenny wiped her tears away with a tissue.

After hearing how the Queen died – peacefully at Balmoral – Stephen remarked: ‘So nice to hear. That’s how we all want to go. Peacefully.’

Meanwhile, at the first mention of her eldest child being declared King Charles III, having succeeded his mother on the throne, Georgia remarked that the title ‘just doesn’t sound right’.

Izzi expressed how she feels complete ‘disbelief’ over the Queen’s death, as Amani admitted that it never ‘crossed her mind’ that Queen Elizabeth II would no longer be around.

As Mary began weeping, her husband Giles extended a comforting hand, saying to his wife: ‘Steady, steady.’

Jenny broke out into the national anthem, before choking up as she spoke to Lee about how the Queen ‘never had a family life’ because she was crowned so young.

‘She was too busy looking after us,’ she said, as she teared up once more.

While watching Huw’s newscast in silence, Alison began crying, as her husband George took her hand.

At the end of the segment, Mary shared with Giles that she feels it’s a ‘problem’ that they don’t have a ‘female role model’ to look up to in the limelight.

‘What about Mary Berry?’ Giles suggested, as Mary retorted: ‘Oh Giles.’

Following the Queen’s death, there was uncertainty over which channels would still air their prescheduled programmes.

In a statement released by Channel 4, the channel outlined how it had made ‘significant changes’ to its schedule, ‘including added extended news coverage, to ensure that Channel 4 is respectful following the news from Buckingham Palace about the death of Her Majesty The Queen’.

It continued: ‘Channel 4 exists to offer viewers an alternative and that is particularly important at times like this. Gogglebox is a much loved national institution and it will air as planned tonight bringing a valuable sense of continuity for many of our viewers.’

Gogglebox returns next Friday at 9pm on Channel 4 and is available to watch on All 4.
