Logan Paul knocked out Sami Zayn and hinted at plans to challenge Roman Reigns in an intriguing opening to WWE SmackDown this week.

On Friday night, the controversial YouTuber was back for the first time since his win over The Miz at SummerSlam, announcing a press conference in Las Vegas on Saturday (September 17).

He was soon interrupted by Paul Heyman – flanked by Zayn, Solo Sikoa and The Usos – as he tried to persuade Logan not to challenge the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion..

The social media star seemed undeterred as he pondered what would happen if he got lucky and landed one special right hand, before Zayn got involved and insisted Roman should’ve let him handle things instead of Heyman.

However, he got dropped with a huge right head by Logan – who had referenced the time he took Floyd Mayweather to the limit – before retreating as Ricochet came out to face Sami.

Not surprisingly, these two delivered in a big way to kick off the in-ring action on the show, keeping a fast pace and working well together (with Michael Cole even referencing PWG), while The Usos and Logan Paul provided another layer of storytelling, getting involved before Ricochet picked up the win.

Madcap Moss came out after the match to stand beside Logan and Ricochet, adding a little bit of something to hit NXT North American Title match with Solo later in the night.

The opening segment and match were a good way to kick things off, and start to position Logan as a threat to Roman Reigns.

Brawling Brutes earn tag team title match, Shotzi saves Raquel Rodriguez, Liv Morgan challenges Ronda Rousey and more

We’ll jump to the main event here, where the Brawling Brutes – Ridge Holland and Butch – battled The New Day, Hit Row and Imperium’s Ludwig Kaiser and Giovanni Vinci.

Considering the wealth of talent involved and the headline spot they found themselves in, it’s no surprise they delivered here in a physical and thoroughly entertaining match.

In the end, Holland snuck in to get a win after an Imperium Bomb, giving Brawling Brutes the win and earning the English duo a shot at The Usos’ tag team titles next week.

Earlier in the night, Maximum Male Models were out to show off their back to school collection but Braun Strowman had other ideas, decimating them on the ramp and then hitting mån.sôör with a huge powerbomb.

Alpha Academy had other ideas and actually took the Monster Among Men off his feet as Otis looked like a threat, while chad Gable showed off his smarts.

This worked well as a way to rebuild Strowman, settling him into his first feud – but it appears Maximum Male Models is already dead in the water despite the talent and charisma of everyone involved.

Bayley picked up the win over Raquel Rodriguez in a great match where the latter looked strong even in defeat.

The Role Model needed her Damage CTRL teammates Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky to get the victory, while Shotzi had a great babyface turn as she rushed to the ring to save Raquel from the three-on-one attack.

Backstage, Ronda Rousey had a sit-down interview interrupted by Liv Morgan, as the SmackDown Women’s Champion challenge her opponent to an Extreme Rules match at the upcoming premium live event.

Drwe McIntyre hopped on the announce table to respond to Karrion Kross’ words warning earlier in the night, before threatening to knock him out with a Claymore.

Before facing Madcap Moss, Solo Sikoa told his brothers Jimmy and Jey to stay backstage for the match, instead asking Zayn to be by his side.

This was a great way to highlight the NXT star, who looked strong despite some flashes of offense for Moss.

He retained the gold after some interference from Zayn, and it’s nice to see the title defended on the blue brand to drawn attention to NXT.

WWE SmackDown airs Friday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
