Adil Ray has revealed the news of the Queen’s death has brought all the emotions back from losing his own mother shortly before the pandemic.

The presenter, 48, revealed to Kate Garraway on Good Morning Britain that he had never spoken about his mother’s death previously but had gone back to work on the show just four days after she died.

Discussing King Charles III’s many engagements since Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, he told Kate: ‘Whatever your thoughts on the monarchy or King Charles, it is somebody who has lost their mother.

‘It dawned on me the other day when I heard he is going to pay a visit to the London Metropolitan Police to see the operation there, and I thought “God, have some rest, please!” because it’s extraordinary what he’s been doing.’

Kate then asked: ‘You’ve lost your mum, haven’t you?’

Opening up about his mother’s death following a battle with Parkinson’s, Adil explained: ‘Well yeah, I’ve never really talked about it actually, but yes I lost my mum just before the pandemic.

‘I was on this show, I would come on this show and hold it to myself and hide it in. It’s very difficult in those times, I think my mum passed away and I was on here four days later.

‘My brother and family said to me: “Just carry on because that’s what mum would have wanted you to do.”’

Adil admitted that watching King Charles and the rest of the Royal family grieve brought back emotions for him, adding: ‘You look at the Royal family, and everybody will feel this if you’ve lost somebody close, it’s all coming back.

‘You live with it every day to be honest, but this at this moment here, everyone is feeling that.

‘The moment I heard about the Queen’s passing I wanted to pick up the phone and speak to my mum, because I know exactly the conversation she would have – she’d have thoughts, she would have memories and she would be like “I feel so bad for her, I feel so bad for the family.”’

He revealed that while sorting through his mother’s belongings, he had found that she had kept newspapers of key Royal events from before Charles and Diana’s wedding.

Adil also revealed that the collective outpouring of grief for the Queen helped him open up, adding: ‘It’s the first time I’ve talked about it and I felt a bit conscious.

Glad you said that @adilray about your mum. When our Queen died, I just felt so compelled every bit of the day, to ring my mum and tell her but sadly she died many years ago #GMB
