An Australian journalist made an absolute howler on Monday as he mistook Liz Truss for a ‘minor royal’.

Channel Nine reporters Peter Overton and Tracy Grimshaw struggled to identify the UK’s new Prime Minister during their live coverage of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II on Monday (September 19).

Truss was among the mourners at the late monarch’s state funeral following Her Majesty’s death aged 96 on September 8, but the two presenters couldn’t place her as she got our of her car at Westminster Abbey.

During the broadcast, Overton said: ‘So, this is a significant motorcade, we are being told now. Come with us as we try and identify who is getting out of the car.

‘This is under police escort of course. I would suggest this might be royalty, Tracy.  Hard to identify. Maybe minor royals, members of the … I can’t identify them at this point…’

Not surprisingly, social media had a field day with the mistake, which comes after Truss was the last world leader to be seen with the Queen days before her death.

One Twitter user said: ‘Peter Overton and Tracy Grimshaw having no idea who Liz Truss – the new British Prime Minister – is during the live coverage of the Queen’s funeral was so awks.’

Another added: ‘Good job Peter Overton. Didn’t know the new PM’.

And a third viewer wrote: ‘Happened to be passing by the living room in my house where my family are watching the Queen’s funeral. Tracy Grimshaw: “And we’re not sure who this is who has arrived. Unfortunately we can’t identify everyone, they look like local dignitaries.” It was Liz Truss. I howled.’

It didn’t take long for Overton to correct his mistake, although by that point people were already poking fun at the error.

‘I’m told that was Liz Truss the new Prime Minister in the distance, she could see hopping out of the car. Thank you very much for that information,’ he said, before telling co-stars Karl Stefanovic, Ally Langdon and UK royal expert Dickie Arbiter that their British guest might be more help.

He added: ‘Karl and Ally, and Dickie, Dickie particularly, you’ll be spotting these faces and recognising them better than us, I think.’

Truss read from the Gospel of John during the state funeral.

‘Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me,’ she said. ‘In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.’
