Should the Dallas Cowboys Trade Up ahead of 2021 NFL Draft?

The Dallas Cowboys ended their 2020 NFL campaign on a disappointing note with a 23-19 loss to divisional rivals, New York Giants. Mike McCarthy concluded his debut season as the Cowboys head coach with a 6-10 record. A lot of their losses were down to the fact that franchise quarterback Dak Prescott was out with a long-term injury.

However, the Jerry Jones-owned franchise also struggled from a defensive point of view. As we edge closer toward the 2021 NFL Draft, one can’t help but wonder what path the Cowboys will take in order to strengthen their roster this summer.

One way or another, Dak Prescott and Co. need some fresh talent if they want to mount a challenge for the NFC East crown in the months to follow.

Should Dallas Cowboys trade up ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft?

As per the latest reports, star quarterback Dak Prescott is scheduled to make a return to the Dallas Cowboys starting lineup by Week 2 of the 2021 NFL season. The 27-year old signed a 4-year, $160 million deal to stay in Dallas. The deal has a maximum value of $164 million, including $126 million in guarantees. It also includes a no-trade and a no-tag clause.

So it will be safe to say that Jerry Jones and his team of scouts are not interested in selecting a quarterback at the upcoming draft. The Cowboys own the 10th overall pick. But with someone like Kyle Pitts or a Patrick Surtain II on their mind, it might be wiser for them to trade up ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Jones is reportedly ‘infatuated’ with Florida Gators tight end, Kyle Pitts, who is one of the first-round prospects this year. But it is unlikely that he will still be available at 10th overall. Alabama cornerback, Patrick Surtain II (son of former NFL player Patrick Surtain) is also in great demand.

Since taking ownership of the Cowboys in 1989, GM Jerry Jones Jones has made 161 trade deals. 68 of them have been draft-day deals. The Texas-based franchise has 10 selections in the 2021 NFL draft. Only rivals, Philadelphia Eagles (11) have more.

So if they do give up multiple picks this year, they might be able to move to 7 (Detroit Lions) or 8 (Carolina Panthers) in order to get their respective targets. It’s time for ‘Trader Jerry’ to do what he does best!
