Piers Morgan has joined in with the full-throated praise for the soldiers who acted as pallbearers for the Queen’s coffin at her state funeral, agreeing with others that they should be awarded honours.

Following on from comments from the likes of MP Tobias Ellwood and Ant Middleton, both former members of the military themselves, the presenter stated he felt it was ‘the least we can give’.

He discussed the eight men’s ‘faultless’ performance as they bore the lead-lined coffin at critical parts of the services and processions, with billions of eyes upon them around the world.

The soldiers were from Queen’s Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, flown in especially from Iraq to prepare to perform the role in both London and Windsor.

Broadcaster Piers said he couldn’t think of ‘a more pressured thing to do other than engage in real war’, which he acknowledged, of course, is part of their other duties.

‘I can’t think of a bigger honour for these guys or a bigger responsibility or more stress to have dbillions of people around the world watching,’ he said during Wednesday’s episode of Uncensored.

‘It’s a very heavy coffin and it’s carrying the greatest monarch in history, the pressure not to make any mistake – enormous. And they were completely faultless, and the country, I think, recognised that.’

Discussing whether the country should ‘go further’ in its recognition, all of his panel guests agreed a gong should be in order.

Piers added: ‘I agree, eight MBEs would be the least we can give them and congratulations to them and their families, who must have been bursting with pride – but imagine being the parent of one of those kids and watching and thinking please don’t let anything go wrong!’

His thoughts echo the praise that other broadcasters heaped on the pallbearers.

‘Such a difficult duty carried out impeccably,’ Lorraine Kelly noted on Twitter on Monday, as she agreed with Piers that the soldiers’ performance was ‘faultless’.

Channel 5 presenter Dan Walker also congratulated them on their composure.

‘I don’t know about you but I held my breath for most of this part… well done lads,’ he wrote. ‘Trusted shoulders, nerves of steel.’

Piers Morgan: Uncensored airs weeknights at 8pm on TalkTV.
