Well, that was unexpected.

‘His sense of reality didn’t help us’: Make Me Prime Minister candidate weighs in on Darius’s elimination after refusing to resign-Cydney Yeates-Entertainment – Metro

Make Me Prime Minister’s Darius became the first candidate to be eliminated from the new Channel 4 after refusing to resign as Prime Minister. And, according to fellow contestant Holly, he was lacking awareness.

The brand new competition series, which started on Tuesday night, follows 12 ordinary yet opinionated Brits with views from across the political spectrum in a contest to see if they have what it takes to lead the nation.

The first episode saw the candidates split into two groups and tasked with creating a brand new education policy, before being grilled by journalists at a press conference, putting their policy into practice, and going head-to-head with the opposition at a fierce debate.

After losing the debate to Natalie by a landslide, political heavyweights Alastair Campbell and Baroness Sayeeda Warsi offered Darius the opportunity to resign there and then.

However, Darius didn’t want to give up on his dream just yet and returned to his team to break the news.

His second lease of life didn’t last long though, as no sooner than he sat around the table with his group to talk through their failures, Alistair and Baroness Saveeda came in and opted to show him the door.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Darius’s team member Holly reckons his leadership was somewhat lacking. However, reflecting on the moment he came back into the cabinet and revealed he wouldn’t be resigning, Holly tells us she was ‘split’ over his decision.

‘I think sometimes with his leadership he probably could have been stronger, but also as a team we didn’t work very well together,’ she says.

‘So, for me, I was always of two views. I think if we helped Darius a bit more, we probably would have been more successful, but then I think he thought things were going well when they weren’t. That sense of realism didn’t help us.’

Holly took on the role of press secretary for the first challenge of the series and was on hand to bat away the press when Darius was unable to answer their questions.

‘I felt I had to protect Darius from the press and if anything was going wrong to step in,’ she says.

‘I had to get Darius away so he could go off and be involved in talking with the kids. I saw it as me taking the bullet for him and it was my job to do so.’

Holly admits that the team didn’t have that much to prepare for the debate, which saw her Prime Minister go head-to-head against the opposing team’s Prime Minister, Natalie.

‘We didn’t get that much time to truly support Darius before going into the debate,’ she tells us.

‘But at the same time, I think Darius delivered everything really well, just our policy had too many holes in that it was almost like a losing battle. It didn’t have enough substance. Even though his delivery was excellent, without substance we couldn’t get very far.’

Next week, the remaining candidates will be tasked with tackling obesity, and Labour MP Jess Phillips is sent to see how they’re are getting on.

Make Me Prime Minister airs Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 4.
