Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last few hours, it won’t come as a shock that Hugh Jackman is set to sport his claws again and reprise his role of Wolverine in Deadpool 3.

Ryan Reynolds shared a most welcome update yesterday about the upcoming Marvel movie, and announced that Jackman would play Wolverine ‘one more time’

Jackman’s third solo movie, Logan, was sold as his final appearance as the X-Men character, after 17 years in the role.

Now, James Mangold, the director of The Wolverine and Logan, has shared his thoughts about the news.

While many fans were elated that Jackman would be joining the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mangold sent out a cryptic tweet.

The Indiana Jones 5 director simply shared the gif of Wolverine’s brutal death in Logan, which was an emotional moment, where he sacrificed himself for his new-found daughter.

Oh my gosh! Everybody chill. Just kidding! I’m all good! LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or worm hole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what maddness my dear friends @VancityReynolds and @RealHughJackman cook up! pic.twitter.com/qaCG4Z39x4

Despite the finality of this end at the time, more recently the MCU has taken a dive into the multiverse, where new variants of the same character appear from different worlds and backgrounds.

Some of his followers suggested that Mangold was ‘salty’ about Reynolds and Jackman’s new collaboration in the R-rated flick.

One wrote: ‘It seems you are not taking this news well,’ as another added: ‘We’re in the multiverse, anything is possible!’

A third mused: ‘Did everyone forget that anything is possible since Deadpool has a time machine as a watch? They can do this as a one off, although I get how it can diminish the effect of the wonderful Logan.’

Other fans reassured the director: ‘Logan is and will always be the send-off to him playing the character, this is just a little side quest.’

However, the writer and director swiftly told everyone ‘chill’ and his message was meant to be a light-hearted tweet in response to the news.

‘Oh my gosh!’ Mangold added, ‘Everybody chill. Just kidding! I’m all good!’

He continued: ‘LOGAN will always be there. Multiverse or prequel, time warp or worm hole, canon or non-canon or even without a rationale, I cannot wait to see what madness my dear friends @VancityReynolds and @RealHughJackman cook up!’

There’s still a lot for fans to be excited about, seeing as when Logan was originally released Jackman confirmed to Graham Norton that it was his ‘last outing’ as the character.

His co-star Patrick Stewart added that the duo ‘sobbed’ as the credits rolled, after the movie debuted at the Berlin Film Festival, as it was the ‘perfect’ end to their time in the franchise.

Stewart said about his role as Charles Xavier: ‘If this is the end, there is no more perfect and beautiful way to say au revoir, goodbye, adios, than what has just happened, so I think it’s the end for me too.’

He added: ‘Why would I want to do another go at this after what we’ve done in this movie, as this movie is really, really good.’

However, the multiverse has also seen a variant of Xavier (and Stewart himself) return, as head of the illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

This announcement also comes only hours after Marvel boss Kevin Feige hinted that Elizabeth Olsen could also return as Wanda Maximoff in the MCU, as he teased: ‘Anything is possible in the Multiverse.’
