The Lord of the Rings prequel series The Rings of Power has raised all sorts of theories after episode 6, including is Halbrand actually Sauron?

The latest episode, titled Udun, continued the story that takes place thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies.

If you’re not familiar with Tolkien’s story story, Sauron is the actual Lord of the Rings, who forged the rings of power so that he could control Middle-earth and bend it to his will.

Frodo, Gandalf, and friends aim to defeat him by destroying the One Ring.

In fact, some fans are wondering whether Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) is in fact Lord Sauron himself, with the question of Sauron’s identity a central concern in the series – Adar (Joseph Mawle) appears to be happy to let people believe he’s the dark lord.

But why do viewers think Halbrand is Sauron? Here’s the bets theories so far:

Halbrand is from the Southlands

Ever since he first appeared in The Rings of Power, fans of the series have hotly speculated about the true nature of Halbrand, as well as the truth of his backstory.

When he arrives in the show, he tells Galadriel that he is fleeing Orcs who have taken over his homeland country of the Southlands. Fans were immediately suspicious because Galadriel had only recently been informed that Sauron himself was said to be hiding there.

We now know, after he was imprisoned for fighting some Númenóreans, that Halbrand was king in the Southlands. His behaviour in episode 5, Partings, has had some fans doubting his honour.

Some fans believe that he will eventually become the Witch-King of Angmar, but his close association with the realm most closely linked to Sauron will eventually reveal the dark truth behind his backstory.

Sweeping the floors

In episode five, Halbrand is seen sweeping the floors of the forge with a broom. While Halbrand was ostensibly sweeping the floor, fans spotted that he was actually spreading the dirt he was meant to be clearing, ‘covering the entire area in darkness’.

A fan on Reddit said: ‘Did anyone else catch this? I noticed here in this scene he’s not actually sweeping. He’s spreading the dirt covering the entire area in darkness.’ While some fans disagreed with this assessment, many viewers were eager to find out if this seemingly incidental scene leads somewhere important.

Another fan added to the theory by saying: ‘Sweeping is often used to represent the idea of things being put in order. Like a plan coming together.’

A violent past…

In the latest episode, it is revealed that Halbrand and villain Adar (Joseph Mawle) once knew each other

During a battle in the Southlands, Halbrand is preparing to kill Adar when he asks the Orc ‘father’: ‘You remember me?’

Halbrand is angry that Adar does not remember him, and prepares to kill him, but Galadriel talks him out of it. However, it’s clear that Halbrand had a score to settle and it’s clear that, despite being on opposing sides in this week’s big battle, he and Adar have a shared history.

Fans are convinced that, if Halbrand isn’t Sauron after all, then the show has done a very, very good job of fooling them: ‘[Episode 6] was full of hints about him being Sauron. His dialogue with Adar and especially when he asks him who he is.’

Another viewer said: ‘They’re spoon-feeding this to us at this point.’

Even fans who don’t want Halbrand to be Sauron are starting to admit that there’s no longer a way to deny it: ‘I really don’t want it to be the case… But after tonight, I think there’s no denying it.’
