The Rings of Power actor Megan Richards has described the exact process she went through to turn into harfoot Poppy Proudfellow.

The rising star features in the JRR Tolkien adaptation, which is set thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

Poppy is part of the community of harfoots led by Sadoc Burrows (Sir Lenny Henry), where she is often seen being the voice of reason to her mischievous friend Elanor Brandyfoot (Markella Kavenagh).

The duo find themselves in a spot of bother when Elanor approaches The Stranger (Daniel Weyman), a giant who fell from the sky in a meteor, plummeting to earth.

The Stranger, who does not speak English or Elvish, appears to possess magic powers and Poppy and Elanor struggle to keep him a secret from their families when he comes crashing into their camp.

After a strong scolding, The Stranger turns out to be of use to Elanor’s parents when they up sticks and move to another base, with the mysterious creature able to bear the weight of their caravan.

As one of the three breeds of hobbits in Middle Earth, along with Stoors and Fallohides, the harfoots, which translates as ‘one with hairy feet’ have a distinct appearance.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Megan said the process required hours in the make-up chair and costume department every day before filming in New Zealand.

She explained: ‘I was in makeup for almost two hours because [harfoots] have prosthetic ears and then after that, we would spend half an hour for costume.

‘On set, there was a prosthetic foot tent and a whole extra team just for that. It would take around another 20 minutes to put on these massive sock, flipper things every day, which was really incredible. You get to love them towards the end and don’t want to take them off.

‘We would need up going to set around three and a half hours before we started shooting every day.’

Megan, 24, also revealed she had never read Tolkien or watched Peter Jackson’s film trilogy when she auditioned for a part in Rings of Power.

She said: ‘[The Lord of the Rings] was completely brand new. I had no idea. My agent rang me and was like, “So it’s The Lord of the Rings.” And I was like, “Okay,” And he was like, “Do you not know what I said? Do you know what I’m talking about?” And I was like, “No”.

‘So when I went to New Zealand, one of the cinemas was having a movie marathon of all the extended versions of The Lord of the Rings films. We went and watched them and then, 12 and a half hours later, after coming out of the cinema, I felt like I’d been hit with Middle Earthiness. It was incredible. It was such an honor. And that was my first experience of Tolkien.’
