Warning: spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead season 11 episode 17.

The beginning of the end is here, as The Walking Dead’s final batch of episodes have started being released on Disney Plus.

In season 11 episode 17, the dream team of Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) are on a mission to hunt down the villainous Lance Hornsby (Josh Hamilton) while he’s outside the confines of the Commonwealth.

In a private moment, Daryl makes a promise to Maggie about her late husband Glenn Rhee (Steven Yeun), which has left fans ‘sobbing’ six years after Glenn’s tragic death at the hands of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) in season seven.

In the mid-season finale of The Walking Dead season 11, Daryl shot Leah (Lynn Collins) – his former lover – in the back of the head to safe Maggie’s life.

In the latest episode, Maggie expresses her sorrow over the way events played out, telling Daryl: ‘What you did back there… I know that Leah meant something to you. I’m sorry.’

However, Daryl turns to Maggie and tells her that she has nothing to apologise for – nor will she ever at any point in their friendship.

‘Glenn would’ve wanted me to look after you,’ he responds. ‘You don’t have to ever say sorry. Not to me.’

Fans have been left bawling over their heartfelt exchange, with one tweeting: ‘The way Daryl cares so much about Maggie, he will always be on her side and always protects her.’

‘This scene got me 😭 daryl talkin bout glenn to maggie. his family 🥹 norman reedus and lauren cohan’s performances are incredible!

One fan said they were ‘wrecked’ after watching the scene unfold, while another said that Daryl’s mention of Glenn’s name made them ‘instantly tear up’.

‘“Glenn would’ve wanted me to look after you.” – Daryl to Maggie. Do you hear crying? Oh wait…IT’S ME,’ someone else penned.

While The Walking Dead is coming to an end, the finale of the series won’t mark a final goodbye to Daryl and Maggie, as both characters are set to return in their own spin-offs.

Norman recently teased that his spin-off will be ‘completely different’ from the original show.

‘There’s gonna be a spinoff, and it’ll be me alone, and I’ll be on this mission, and those characters will come back together later on down the road, of course; and other characters that have gone missing, I’ll probably run into,’ he told Leo Edit.

Lauren’s show – which will see her come back with Maggie’s former enemy Negan – recently announced a new title, changing from Isle of the Dead to The Walking Dead: Dead City.

The Walking Dead is available to watch in the UK on Disney Plus.
