After eight years of playing Minecraft behind a mask, Dream has finally revealed what he looks like to his fans.

Despite having over 30 million subscribers, amounting to 2.7 billion views for his videos, even close friends didn’t know what YouTuber Dream looked like… until now.

Most of the time he’s just appeared as a disembodied voice in his many Minecraft videos but when he does make a personal appearance it’s while wearing his iconic smiley mask, which he has only now discarded.

He promised fans he’d make the reveal on Sunday night and so gained a huge audience for the unveiling, where the secret was finally revealed that, underneath the mask, he was… just a guy.

Although his first name is apparently Clay, and he lives in Orlando, Florida, almost nothing else is known about Dream, who by his own admission has been ‘bunkered up’ in his house for the last several months.

The reason for the reveal, other than it must be a bit stuffy behind that mask, is that his friend and fellow streamer George was moving into his house and that would inevitably lead to Dream being caught on screen by accident.

He also implied he’d be socialising more in public, so rather than risk a leak he wanted to make the announcement himself, on his own terms.

Before the public reveal he spent a few days showing online friends what he looked like, because apparently they didn’t know either – although nobody was expecting some sort of Phantom of the Opera style horror revelation.

Now that everyone knows what Dream looks like his content will change a little, as since he doesn’t have to be behind a mask he will do more IRL (in real life) content, which may mean more of an emphasis on Twitch.

He will still focus on Minecraft though, where the videos are still expected to feature only his voice.

Whether the fact that the mystery is now revealed will see Dream lose some of his previous alure remains to be seen, but it’s going to take a long time for those 30 million subscribers to drift away if it does.
