Succession fans were taken aback after hearing a very familiar speech on Monday from an unlikely source: Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng.

The Conservative politician made headlines this week after a humiliating U-turn over the 45p tax rate cut for higher earners.

Prime Minister Liz Truss declared herself ‘absolutely committed’ to cut the rate from 45% to 40% after it was slated by opposition parties and her own MPs.

However, her Chancellor has been forced to turn back on the decision, despite the pair repeatedly reiterating their support for the measure for days on end.

Mr Kwarteng said ‘it is clear that the abolition of the 45p tax rate has become a distraction from our overriding mission to tackle the challenges facing our country’.

But it was the introduction to his message that had caught people’s attention, after, in a tweet, he added of the criticism: ‘We get it, and we have listened.’

Among the many reactions to the news online, Succession fans have drawn comparisons to his speech and one from the hit HBO show.

In series three, episode three of the show, while addressing employees following a series of scandals, Siobhan ‘Shiv’ Roy (Sarah Snook) attempts to keep staff on board while saving the company’s waning reputation, saying ‘we get it’.

The comparison of the two was not lost on fans, with them taking to social media to talk about the hilarious coincidence.

‘Does the UK government have the same PR advisers as Waystar Royco,’ one person Tweeted.

Another was keen to see this continue, writing: ‘Hoping to see more Succession inspired scenes at the conference…hope someone crashes the Truss speech with a Nirvana like moment.’

The Chancellor is set to make another dramatic U-turn and lay out his plan to get UK debt falling earlier than planned.

He previously insisted he would wait to publish the details until November 23, but now it looks like he is expected to lay out plans early.

Mr Kwarteng dismissed the negative reaction to his mini budget as a ‘hullaballoo’ and insisted ‘there’s a real kernel, a strong body of ideas’ in his plan for growth, at a Tory conference event last night.
