Adrian Chiles has opened up about his battle with alcohol, revealing that at one point he drunk up to 100 units a week.

Appearing on Loose Women today, the former The One Show presenter discussed his drinking journey ahead of the release of his new book, How I Learned to Love Drinking Less.

‘I was drinking up to a 100 units a week,’ Adrian revealed, adding: ‘But without every getting drunk, without getting into trouble or anything.’

The 55-year-old presenter said that the ‘idea’ people have in their heads of a ‘problem drinker’ let him think he didn’t actually have a problem.

‘But there must be some dependency there,’ he realised after noticing how much he was drinking.

However, he did address the problem and cut down on his drinking, after a liver scan showed how much fatty tissue he had that would later effect his health.

‘Something’s got to change so obviously that focused my mind,’ he continued, saying he ‘set about cutting down.’

When Loose Women panellist asked if it was hard for him to cut down, Adrian replied: ‘No because I did a mental job on myself, because I thought, if I lined up all the drinks I’ve drunk since I was 15-years-old, that line would be about three miles long.

‘Well that’s a lot to put through your system.’

He added that the ‘real tragedy’ was to think about how many of those drinks he really wanted, or ‘needed or enjoyed’.

‘How many of all those three miles of drink? Much less than half,’ he added, saying he was ‘drinking for the sake of drinking, out of habit’.

‘All I did really was cut out the unneccessary drinks,’ he added.

When Dame Kelly Holmes asked if there was a reason behind him starting to get addicted to drinking, he shared: ‘In your head, I think the more you drink, the more likely you are to get addicted.

‘For me and many others, it’s part of life.’

He recalled a memory from when he was 14-years-old on a school exchange to Germany, after his nan had died.

‘It was awful,’ he recalled, before a trip to a brewery where they were given lager.

‘I remember drinking this lager and everything seemed fine. It was profound.’

‘Looking back, it’s one of the revelations I’ve found about myself,’ he added, concluding: ‘But before you know it, it’s in charge of you before you’re in charge of it.’

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
