Turns out our obsession with true crime isn’t slowing down anytime soon, with Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story surpassing Bridgerton as the second most-watched English language show in the streaming service’s history.

Since being released three weeks ago, Ryan Murphy’s drama about the life of the American serial killer has been watched a massive 701.37 million hours by audiences.

Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer stars Evan Peters in the titular role, and investigates the motives and methods of Dahmer, who murdered 17 men between 1978 and 1991.

Also known as the Milwaukee Monster, Dahmer’s crimes were so shocking, they involved sexual assault, necrophilia, and cannibalism.

He was eventually caught when a target of his managed to escape and flag down two police officers, who then discovered his apartment was full of victims remains and Polaroid pictures detailing his crimes.

Whilst eventually sentenced, he died in 1994 after being beaten to death by another inmate.

Reviews of the unsettling series have been mixed, with audiences at odds about its presentation of the appalling crimes, but also praising the performances and the fact it doesn’t glorify the criminal.

However, family members of some of the victims have come out and slammed the series, with the sister of one saying that she felt it was ‘harsh and careless.

Although the show hasn’t quite yet managed to take out the top spot, which is held by the fourth season of Stranger Things (with 1.35 billion hours), dethroning the British period drama was no small feat.

The second season of Bridgerton has been watched 656.26 hours, while the first season holds fourth spot, with 625.49 hours.

Currently contracted to a $300 million (£271 million) deal with Netflix, Murphy also has another hit on his hand with the horror drama film, Mr. Harrigan’s Phone.

Based on the novella of the same name by Stephen King, it was the most viewed film on platform last week, making Murphy the first producer to hold the two top spots simultaneously for a TV series and film on Netflix.

Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story is available to watch on Netflix.
