Sydney Sweeney is set to take on the role of Barbarella over 50 years after the French comic book character was brought to life by Jane Fonda.

The Euphoria star, 25, will take on the iconic role as well as executive producing a new film about the character, according to Deadline.

The 1968 cult classic film, based on the Jean-Claude Forest comic book, was helmed by Roger Vadim, the famous French filmmaker who was Jane’s first husband and who had previously been married to Brigitte Bardot.

Jane had played the sultry space adventurer from the 41st century in the original sci-fi film, which received mixed reviews for its plot and sexual themes.

The actress and activist, now 84, previously revealed that she got drunk on vodka as she was so nervous about filming a sequence in which she strips.

She also admitted that it took her a while to grow to love the film, previously explaining: ‘You know, when it first came out, I was just becoming an activist and a feminist and I thought it wasn’t politically correct – and now I appreciate it because it’s not.’

Jane also revealed during a BFI event a few years ago that she had even pitched a sequel in which she would play a ‘grandmother’ figure leading a team of women to rescue the lead character, played by Angelina Jolie, after she fell into the hands of the villain.

The role of Barbarella had also originally been offered to Brigitte and Sophia Loren, who had both turned it down.

Not much is yet known about the new version of the film Sydney will star in, with insiders adding that the new movie is still in development with no writer or director currently attached.
