Tony Adams was overwhelmed with joy after receiving positive feedback from Craig Revel Horwood in week four of Strictly Come Dancing – so much so that he let an expletive slip.

So far, the former pro footballer has sailed through the live shows after winning the hearts of the nation, but the judges’ comments haven’t always been so glowing.

He nailed a Full Monty routine in Movie Week last Saturday, leaving the female judges in particular rather flustered after he stripped to a pair of glittery pink shorts.

But, naturally, resident Mr Nasty has had nothing but criticism for the Arsenal legend, so when Tony finally did receive somewhat of a compliment, he struggled to control himself.

Tony and pro partner Katya Jones danced an American smooth to With A Little Help From My Friends by Joe Cocker, which he dedicated to those who have been by his side.

After an emotional performance, the former footballer received encouraging feedback from the judging panel, with head judge Shirley Ballas giving him a standing ovation.

She said: ‘I wasn’t expecting that, I mean you totally stepped outside your comfort zone… I am extremely surprised and very proud, well done.’

But, the real cherry on top of the cake was when Craig issued a short and sweet comment: ‘Better.’

The feedback sent Tony running around with joy in full-on football-style celebrations, punching the air and cheering.

‘Maybe now I’ll get a three!’, he joked, after Craig scored him for his previous performance.

Tony and Katya were all ready to head off to host Claudia Winkleman for their scores, forgetting that Motsi Mabuse was yet to give her thoughts.

‘Oh, s**t, sorry!’, Tony said, to which Motsi laughed: ‘It’s ok! There’s no topping “better” so I’m fine with that. You guys were brilliant, well done!’

‘I was just so excited!’, he told Claudia (Picture: BBC)

As a result, Claudia had to apologise for the language, saying to viewers: ‘I would like to apologise if there was anything fruity in the language area.’

‘I’m sorry!’, Tony replied, not realising his slip of the tongue. ‘I was so excited, Claudia!’

‘I get it, I totally get it,’ Claudia laughed.

Tony Adams is a former football team captain. He’s not an actor or performer. He is a revelation on this programme. An absolute joy and an example to other men of his generation in particular. #Strictly

i’m gonna get soppy in the comments: tony may be the comedy duffer, but he’s got a beautiful soul and has had a real and valid struggle in his life. doing something as joyful as strictly is a therapy, and a chance to have fun and get back some life. i love him.

Tony received a score of 26 points for the performance, as well as the viewers’ seal of approval, with plenty noting how much he has ‘improved’ over the weeks.

‘One thing I admire about Tony Adams is that he will 100% commit to every dance. He’s definitely improved a hell of a lot!’, one fan tweeted.

‘Tony is pure feel good Strictly Come Dancing!’, declared another.

But, amid the fun, Tony also showed his sensitive side as he grew emotional saying the dance was dedicated to ‘everyone who saved my life.’

‘I want to dedicate to everyone who made me want to live again,’ the tearful star said, in reference to his previous battles with alcoholism.

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday and Sunday on BBC One.
