Alison Hammond has shared an interaction she had with a fan the other day, where they told her that they stopped themselves from taking their own life because of the ‘joy’ she gave them.

For several years, the This Morning presenter has cemented her place as one of the most beloved personalities on TV, having recently been nominated for a National Television Award in the best presenter category, which she lost out on to Ant and Dec.

Fans frequently praise her for spreading happiness and laughter around the nation, and on the latest episode of Loose Women, she revealed the incredible impact she had on a particular individual.

Speaking on the ITV programme on Wednesday, Alison emphasised how much she ‘loves television’ and ‘making people happy’.

‘I love the medium of it. I love that you can connect to people at home. A woman came up to me yesterday, and she said, “I was going to commit suicide the other day, and if it wasn’t for you, I would have done it.” She said, “You bring so much joy to me, Alison,”’ she recalled.

‘And it was like, in that moment, I thought, “Look how important that is to bring joy to people through the medium of television.”’

Several members of the studio audience gasped at the anecdote, while one of the Loose Women presenters remarked off-camera: ‘There’s a pressure there as well.’

Earlier on the show, Alison admitted that she’d wanted Loose Women to win the NTA over This Morning, despite being a regular presenter on the latter.

She also recollected the hilarious response her This Morning co-host Dermot O’Leary had when she mistakenly thought she’d heard her name called out as the winner over Ant and Dec, as he bluntly told her that she had not in fact won the accolade.

When the This Morning team took to the stage to collect their NTA, Alison spoke into the mic, joking that she should have won an individual award that night as well.

‘Can I just say we are all so grateful for this award, honestly. I think This Morning is a mood, I ain’t gonna lie,’ she said at the time.

‘Now we all know… I should have won one of these as well!’

She continued: ‘But do you know what, Bradley Walsh, Graham Norton and the legends that are Ant and Dec are amazing, but let’s be honest, I should have won one, innit!

‘But This Morning got one anyway, well done This Morning, yay!’

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV.
