Production is set to resume on the film Rust, however it won’t take place in New Mexico where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot.

According to insiders, filming is likely to take place in California instead, because it would be ‘too emotionally difficult’ for the cast and crew to return to the location where Hutchins died in October 2021.

Hutchins, 42, was fatally wounded when a prop gun actor Alec Baldwin was holding misfired, also injuring director Joel Souza.

Her family had filed a lawsuit against Baldwin and others involved in Rust in February, accusing them of reckless behaviour and cost-cutting measures which led to her death.

A settlement was reached with Baldwin after the filing, and it was confirmed the film would go ahead and filming would resume next year.

While the production had originally been in New Mexico, a source told Deadline: ‘It’s emotionally difficult for the crew and the cast to return to the same place.’

Melina Spadone, the attorney for Rust Movie Productions LLC, confirmed: ‘The production of Rust will not return to New Mexico.

‘The production is considering other locations, including in California, but no decisions have been made.’

Producers are reportedly set to scout locations in California next week, including near Palm Springs and the Nevada border before filming is scheduled to start again in January.

Some roles are still being filled in the crew, including a new line producer, armourer, assistant director and director of photographer.

After reaching a settlement with the production, it was also agreed that Hutchins’ widower, Matthew Hutchins, will serve as an executive producer.

He said in a statement at the time: ‘We have reached a settlement, subject to court approval, for our wrongful death case against the producers of Rust, including Alec Baldwin and Rust Movie Productions, LLC. As part of that settlement, our case will be dismissed.

‘The filming of Rust, which I will now executive produce, will resume with all the original principal players on board in January 2023.

‘I have no interest in engaging in recriminations or attribution of blame (to the producers or Mr. Baldwin).

‘All of us believe Halyna’s death was a terrible accident. I am grateful that the producers and the entertainment community have come together to pay tribute to Halyna’s final work.’

Baldwin added: ‘We are pleased to announce today the settlement of the civil case filed on behalf of the family of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

‘Throughout this difficult process, everyone has maintained the specific desire to do what is best for Halyna’s son.

‘We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the resolution of this tragic and painful situation.’
