Great Balls of Fire singer Jerry Lee Lewis is alive and well, according to his publicist.

The revered musician was briefly reported to have died on Wednesday at his home in Memphis at the age of 87.

However his publicist, Zach Farnum, told ABC News the reports were not true.

Singer Lewis shot to fame in the 1950s with his smash hit Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On, followed by the iconic Great Balls of Fire and Breathless.

He dabbled in everything from gospel to rock n roll and country, and is revered as an astounding live musician.

Over a 70-year career, Lewis continued to find success in music, with his 2006 album Last Man Standing, released when he was 71, the best-selling record of his entire catalogue.

Lewis was conducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2022, and his life adapted into a film starring Dennis Quaid in 1989, which shared its title, Great Balls of Fire, with arguably what was his most popular song.
