The criticism over Kim Kardashian wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress to the Met Gala has only just died down, but it is set to overwhelm us all once again thanks to the latest episode of the Kardashians.

The 42-year-old divided the entire world when she decided to briefly don the late icon’s historic gown on the red carpet in May, with many calling her out.

There was more drama in store for the reality star when it was claimed that the outfit – that Monroe wore to serenade President John F Kennedy on his birthday in 1962 – was destroyed after the event.

In the new instalment of her Hulu series, she gave fans a glimpse into her preparation for the prestigious ball, and revealed that she begged Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum to get her hands on the outfit after they turned her down.

She had originally planned to sit the entire event out over fears she couldn’t top her last appearance, in that all-black Balenciaga look, before promptly changing her mind.

‘I’m fascinated by Marilyn, I love that she did things her way. She transformed herself to be this complete icon and now everyone on the planet knows who she is,’ she told the camera.

‘Much respect.’

Ripley’s gave Kardashian permission to wear Monroe’s gown – which cannot be altered – with the Skims founder revealing that she had managed to slim down and fit into the prototype.

However, her plans were thrown into chaos when the organization took back their offer, as the original ‘wouldn’t go over her hips’.

‘They just pulled the whole thing from me so I can’t even do it, and I’m fuming,’ she told sisters Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian, over lunch.

‘I had to try the prototype first and see if that fit, and once it fit, they sent the original. When I went to put it on, it wouldn’t even go up over my hips. I just was devastated.

‘I wrote them a groveling, begging email but they were very firm. They were like, “We can’t get insurance”, I’m like, “We’ll get the insurance”. I have an answer for everything. They’re just like, “no, we can’t”.

‘I just found that out today, so I’m devastated.’

Ever the trooper, Kardashian vowed to do everything possible to ‘lose 10lbs’ in a bid to make her Met plans a reality, with a montage reminiscent of Sylvester Stallone’s Eye of the Tiger scene in Rocky showing her exercising and dieting.

‘I have about three weeks to fit into this dress,’ she added in a confessional. ‘I am going to do every last thing that I can to try to make this happen. It’s going to be really hard and I’m going to have to eat so clean, so perfect and cut out sugar, which is so hard for me.

‘Please let me try it on again. I’m not going to take no for an answer.’

While the episode cut to credits on a cliffhanger, fans will know that she got her wish and wore Monroe’s dress for a few minutes at the exclusive party, with then-boyfriend Pete Davidson on her arm.

Unfortunately, the moment sparked intense backlash and huge amounts of scrutiny, forcing her to deny that she had physically destroyed the outfit by wearing it.

‘Ripley’s [and I] worked together so well, there were handlers in gloves that put it on me,’ she said while on the Today show.

‘It was such a process…I showed up to the red carpet in a robe and slippers, and I put the dress on on the bottom of the carpet, went up the stairs … I probably had it on for three minutes, four minutes.’

She added: ‘I respect [Monroe], I understand how much this dress means to American history.

‘And with the theme [of the Met Gala] being American, I thought, “What’s more American than Marilyn Monroe singing happy to the President of the United States?’

The Kardashians airs on Hulu in the US and Disney+ in the UK.
