An incel interviewed in a documentary has admitted that he feels irrationally scared of the idea of speaking to women over the fear that he could be wrongly accused of rape or domestic abuse.

The term ‘incel’ is used by people who define themselves as being involuntarily celibate, with many so-called individuals involved in online communities that promote dangerous ideologies.

There have been mass shootings committed by gunmen who self-identified as incels, with supporters of the movement having been accused of perpetuating misogynistic views and rape culture.

For a new All4 programme presented by Ben Zand, the journalist met with several incels, including one called ‘D’ who he took on a night out to the pub to discuss his mindset further.

Before they headed out, D shared with Ben a list of questions he’d written down that he wanted to ask a woman if he had a chance, including whether there was a ‘minimum male height’ and if it’s ‘true that if you don’t have a good body, no one will care if you have a good heart’.

Having also brought up whether there’s a ‘male virgin epidemic going on in the world’, he stated: ‘They’re the things that people talk about, and I want to know what people in real life have to say.’

D was wearing a mask while speaking to Ben about his pre-prepared questions in the car, but took off his face covering while they were at the pub, although his face was blurred for the purposes of the documentary.

While they were sitting at an outdoor table at the pub together, Ben asked D: ‘How do you feel about the idea of talking to a lady?’

D immediately shared why he felt anxious about the prospect, confessing: ‘I mean, I think there might even be a bit of a safety concern in the sense of false rape charges, you could incite that. From what I read on the internet, I read that it’s unsafe to even be in the same room as a woman without a third party.’

Ben followed up on D’s admission, asking: ‘So you think that there’s a chance that as we’re walking around here, you talk to a woman, she’s just going to accuse you of rape potentially?’

‘Or maybe beat herself up and then accuse domestic abuse or assault,’ D added.

Repeating D’s claim back to him, B questioned: ‘She might start punching herself and you’d be really scared that she was going to kind of accuse you of rape or domestic assault, and even go to the extent that she’d start self harming…’

D then chimed back in to add: ‘To make an assault claim on me. Yeah, it’s in my head, because I guess that’s the mindset of the internet, so like an us versus them type of thing.’

Ben looked around as a group of women were listening in on their chat (Picture: Channel 4/All4)

While D was speaking, he began to trail off when he realised that a table of women next to them had caught wind of their conversation, instantly stammering over his words while chuckling nervously.

In a voiceover, Ben said: ‘Our chat had caught the attention of a group of women on the table next to us. D had never had a proper conversation with a woman in real life, and this felt like an opportunity to finally make him realise just how ridiculous his views were.’

UNTOLD – The Secret World of Incels will be on All 4 on Monday November 7.
