The release of The Crown season 5 is just around the corner.

The new series is going to see a variety of new faces enter the fray, with Imelda Staunton taking over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II following the release of season 4 in November 2020.

In addition to the introduction of several new cast members, the new series of the hit Netflix period drama will have a time jump, as audiences are transported to the early 1990s in Buckingham Palace.

So what can we expect from the portrayal of the royal family? Where will we see them next and what are they about to cover?

When does The Crown series 5 drop on Netflix?

The Crown fans won’t need to wait long for the next series to be released.

The eagerly-anticipated fifth series is set to drop on Netflix on November 9, 2022.

The whole series will be released at once, so you will be able to binge through all 10 episodes in one sitting if that’s your thing.

Who is in the cast?

As the latest series will be set after the events of season four, the characters have been recast to reflect their older selves.

Imelda Staunton is the most notable replacement, succeeding Oscar-winner Olivia Colman as the monarch.

Game of Thrones star Jonathan Pryce is taking over from Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip and Lesley Manville is replacing Helena Bonham-Carter as Princess Margaret.

Elizabeth Debicki, known for Tenet and Guardians Of The Galaxy, will replace Emma Corrin as Princess Diana, and Dominic West will take on the role of Prince Charles, now King Charles III.

Elementary star Jonny Lee Miller has been cast as former prime minister Sir John Major, who served as the PM from 1990 to 1997 as leader of the Conservative Party.

What time period does series 5 cover?

The Crown series 5 will cover the tumultuous 1990s, including the divorces of Prince Charles and Diana, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, and Princess Anne and Mark Phillips.

While the divorce wasn’t finalised until 1996, the announcement triggered a chain of events that included the uncovering of recorded phone calls between Charles and Camilla, explicitly exposing their affair.

There were also several public interviews on both sides detailing their rocky relationship, including the now notorious Diana interview with Martin Bashir in which she declared there were ‘three people in her marriage’.

The death of Princess Diana will not be covered in series 5, and will instead feature in the sixth installment of the show which is currently being filmed.

Is there a trailer?

A trailer for the upcoming series was released last month giving fans a sneak peek at the drama that will unfold.

The two-minute teaser hints at the ‘beginning of the end’ as Princess Diana prepares to give her infamous Panorama interview of 1995.

‘She’s at breaking point because of the way she feels she has been treated,’ Bashir is seen saying. ‘They see her as a threat.’

As Diana prepares to take her seat, she vows: ‘I won’t go quietly. I’ll battle till the end.’

The series will also tackle tumultuous times in The Queen and Prince Philip’s marriage, with the suggestion he had an affair with a family friend.

Series 5 of The Crown will be available to stream on Netflix on November 9.
