Stormzy has opened up about his public breakup with presenter Maya Jama, revealing it made him realise he was still just a ‘boy’.

The South London rapper spoke candidly about the end of his long-term relationship with the TV host and credited her for making him realise things about himself he wanted to change.

As GQ’s next cover star, he gave the magazine a rare insight into his usually private life and shared details on the relationship that hit headlines.

Stormzy revealed: ‘I’d never experienced a breakup and the feelings that come with a breakup.

‘And I never wanted to ever be in a position again where I felt what I was feeling.

‘Because it showed me that I was a boy. And I do not want to go any further as a boy.

‘I’ve seen how that manifests in other people. And I don’t want to be like that.’

The famous couple went their separate ways in 2020, four years after becoming an item in 2016.

Bringing things back to the surface in recent months, it seems the rapper is still grieving his former relationship with new Love Island host Maya, as he also told Louis Theroux it was his ‘biggest loss’.

During their chat for the journalist’s upcoming Interview series, the British rap icon said: ‘It was like, OK, you made a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you.

‘That’s probably the biggest loss a man can have, isn’t it? Away from someone passing away, that’s the biggest loss you can have.’

Having previously denied cheating allegations, Stormzy did reveal that his actions throughout his former relationship were ‘disrespectful and inconsiderate’.

Moving away from the topic of romance, the rapper also reflected on his upbringing and childhood with relation to how it shaped him as an artist and individual for his latest cover shoot.

Telling GQ, he said: ‘I realised, especially growing up in South London in the environment I grew up in, there’s never going to be a time anyone encourages man to go deal with his feelings.

‘That’s a very adult thing to think, I’m gonna go deal with my life and my character with who I am and who I want to grow to be.

‘There is power in vulnerability.’

Stormzy will be toasted at the 25th annual GQ Men of the Year celebration in association with BOSS, taking place in London on Wednesday, November 16.

The December/January issue of British GQ is available on newsstands and via digital downloads on Tuesday November 29.
