‘It’s Just Not Fair!’- Jorge Masvidal Lashes Out Against UFC’s Pay Scheme for Fighters
The UFC BMF belt holder Jorge Masvidal will return to the main event at UFC 261. He’ll fight the welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, for the second time to try to avenge his UFC 251 loss. UFC 261 will take place this Saturday in Jacksonville, Florida.
Ahead of the PPV, in an interview with Kevin Iole for Yahoo Sports, Masvidal discussed his money disputes and his prospects in the UFC. Usman has been the dominant champion, but counting Masvidal out in any fight will be a grave error. Their first fight was a dominant win for ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, but Masvidal was coming off short notice, and hence, had an excuse for the loss.
Iole asked Masvidal about his salary dispute with the UFC ahead of UFC 251. The BMF said, “It’s just not fair, and I say this not just for me, but all my brothers and sisters that finally got to pay-per-view… The UFC has to open up those doors. They have to start giving bigger margins to the guys that are bringing in the pay-per-view.”
Jorge Masvidal won’t fight for free or a discount
Masvidal believes he got his fair due because the UFC was desperate in his first match vs. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’. Usman’s opponent Gilbert Burns (who replaced Masvidal due to the aforementioned pay dispute) had just dropped out, and they needed a fighter to save the event in six days, as a cancellation would have resulted in several phone calls and refunds for the UFC.
“I wouldn’t have done it for any lesser. It’s not like I was jumping for an opportunity either. I wanna get paid for what I do. I love what I do, but I’m not gonna do it for free or at a discounted rate,” he concluded.
The issue of fighter pay has been one that has seen people being divided in their opinions. However, no one can deny that the fighters are the heart and soul of the UFC. Hence, if anyone deserves to get paid well, it’s the fighters.
Do you think the fighters in the UFC are earning less money than they deserve?
