David Baddiel has revealed he plans to quit social media ahead of the release of his Channel 4 documentary Jews Don’t Count to avoid anti-Semitic hate.

The comedian and author’s new film is set to launch on the network on Monday (November 21) and sees him explore why, in his opinion, Jewish discrimination is often seen as a lesser form of racism.

Alongside sharing personal stories and his own views, the hour-long programme features interviews with prominent Jewish figures, including celebrities such as Friends star David Schwimmer, comedian Sarah Silverman, and Miriam Margolyes.

While the documentary is hugely educational and is likely to be very well received, Baddiel has voiced his nervousness in regard to the racist backlash that it might face, and so for that reason will be taking himself off Twitter for self-preservation.

Speaking at a Q&A, he told audiences: ‘What I will do when this film comes out, is come off and give my passwords to someone else. And that is about self-protection.’

‘I know this film will generate a lot of noise and some of it will be hate and some of it will definitely be anti-Semitic,’ he continued.

‘It is like, why should I sit with that in my own house? It’s really horrible, but at the same time, I have also used social media as a way of calling out anti-Semitism and talking about anti-Semitism and reaching out to other Jews.

‘It’s complex to come off it completely because it does provide a voice.’

When asked whether he has previously considered quitting Twitter altogether, Baddiel admitted: ‘Lots of times. Hopefully, Elon Musk is destroying it now anyway, so we should be fine.’

Baddiel believes that in the current conversations about identity and about racial justice, Jews are being left out.
