Chesney Hawkes hailed England’s good luck charm after ‘random’ performance in middle of World Cup game-Alicia Adejobi-Entertainment – Metro

Chesney Hawkes is rightfully taking all the credit for England’s triumph against Wales last night. 

The pop icon, 51, made a surprise appearance at the latest Qatar World Cup clash on Tuesday, which resulted in a glorious 3-0 win to England thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden. 

However, fans are convinced the victory was actually down to Chesney after he performed his classic hit The One and Only during the halftime break. They might not be far off as England weren’t doing too well in the first half, only to miraculously score a hatrick after halftime. 

Reacting to Chesney’s ‘random’ appearance, one delighted football fan tweeted: ‘And a petition for Chesney Hawkes to perform at half time for every remaining England game.’ 

One agreed: ‘Chesney Hawkes should play every England match half time from now on.’ 

Another laughed: ‘Nothing gets more random that Chesney Hawkes performing during half time of a major world cup game.’ 

‘Or maybe it was Chesney Hawkes who brought the luck,’ one viewer wondered.

Chesney found another supporter in Arsenal legend and BBC spots pundit Ian Wright, who told the singer during their post-match interview: ‘#ChesneyHawkes. Chesney Hawkes brought the love, man.’

Chesney then joked: ‘I’m going to have to come to every game now. Yes I am [England’s lucky charm], every game now I’ll be back from now on. Because obviously at halftime it was 0-0, at the end I went on, boom!’ 

The musician then quipped that most of the current England team weren’t even born when his hit single was released in 1991. 

He then skipped off to find his favourite West Ham player, Declan Rice, confessing: ‘I’m a Hammer man so I watch him play week in, week out.’ 

The pop star managed to find the footballer and the two posed for a selfie together, wearing matching England shirts as they wrapped their arms around each other in a warm embrace. 

Chesney captioned the photo: ‘Ok…my favourite picture of the year so far…,’ while proudly declaring himself a ‘fanboy’.
