The sheer premise of Cocaine Bear is already outrageous in itself and the newly-released trailer doesn’t disappoint.

Elizabeth Banks is the director behind what promises to be the wackiest film of 2023 which, we kid you not, follows a drug-addled grizzly bear who ingests a ridiculous amount of cocaine before embarking on a rampage.

They say real life is stranger than fiction and it’s certainly the case with Cocaine Bear as it’s inspired by a true story – the drug part, not the blood-thirsty massacre.

Released on Thursday morning, the trailer opens with two passers-by stumbling upon a bloody scene in a cabin where clearly something sinister has happened, only for them to be confronted by a growling bear.

A news report then reveals how millions of dollars worth of cocaine ‘fell from the sky’ after a drug smuggler off-loaded the powder mid-flight.

Of course, a drug dealer (played by the late Ray Liotta) isn’t about to let his huge batch of drugs simply disappear the middle of a forest, so sends his cronies to go fetch his missing supply.

They come across the bear who ate a large chunk of the batch and what ensues is pure chaos as the grizzly struggles to come down from its high. The substance only heightens its appetite as the bear then embarks on a bloody, drug-fuelled rampage throughout the forest.

It’s all partly based on the very real 1985 story of a drug runner from Colombia, dumped more than 70lbs of cocaine in the Chattahoochee National Forest.

A bear stumbled upon the haul and devoured the drugs, sadly dying following an apparent overdose, and was found, according to a New York Times report, ‘among 40 opened plastic containers with traces of cocaine’.

According to the report, as per Variety: ‘The cocaine was apparently dropped from a plane piloted by Andrew Thornton, a convicted drug smuggler who died Sept. 11 in Knoxville, Tenn., because he was carrying too heavy a load while parachuting.’

The official synopsis for Cocaine Bear reads: ‘Inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it, this wild dark comedy finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound apex predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fuelled rampage for more blow … and blood.’

It stars Liotta in one of his final roles before his death in May this year, while the cast also includes O’Shea Jackson Jr, Keri Russell, Alden Ehrenreich, Margo Martindale, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Brooklynn Prince, and Christian Convery.

Cocaine Bear hits cinemas on February 24.
