Strictly Come Dancing star Kym Marsh paid tribute to the late Irene Cara with her performance on Friday.

Cara, who played the role of Coco Hernandez in the 1980 blockbuster Fame and recorded the title song, died earlier this week at the age of 62 in her Florida home.

As the 46-year-old and partner Graziano Di Prima returned back to the ballroom after a week away, Kym opened up on how much of an ‘honour’ it was to be performing to Cara’s song.

‘When I hear that song it takes me back to when I was a kid,’ she began.

‘A legendary tune from a legendary singer.

Kym added: ‘It was always going to be an honour but now even more so,’ before saying how much she feels the ‘pressure’.

Cara’s publicist confirmed she had died on the star’s official Twitter account on Saturday and to Metro.co.uk, saying: ‘Irene was a gifted woman whose body of work is loved by millions of people the world over.

‘She became an icon for music lovers of the 1980s, and inspired many of today’s most influential singers, such as Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.

‘We are all mourning her death but will celebrate her legacy as a bright spot in our lives.’

This is the absolute worst part of being a publicist. I can’t believe I’ve had to write this, let alone release the news. Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I’ll be reading each and every one of them and know she’ll be smiling from Heaven. She adored her fans. – JM pic.twitter.com/TsC5BwZ3fh

Coronation Street actress Kym had to skip the previous live show – which saw Ellie Taylor being the ninth star eliminated – after testing positive for coronavirus last week.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the BBC had said: ‘Kym Marsh has tested positive for Covid-19. As a result, Kym and Graziano will not be taking part in Strictly Come Dancing this weekend.’

They added that the guidance surrounding positive coronavirus cases means that if Kym is negative by the following week, she would be able to come back.

And she certainly made her comeback, with the judges rewarding her and Graziano 34.

Strictly Come Dancing continues next Saturday on BBC One.
