Theories about Elden Ring DLC have just taken a knock, as From Software has announced that PvP Colosseum battles will be a free update.

Given that Elden Ring has been one of the most successful games of all time, and every single Soulsborne game (technically, that doesn’t include Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice) has had paid-for DLC, it’s perfectly reasonable to assume there’ll be an expansion for Elden Ring too.

Officially, there’s been no hint of any DLC, and there haven’t been any leaks either, just information datamined from the game that seemed to suggest that new PvP modes would be added at the game’s mysteriously dormant colosseums.

That is true but, surprisingly, the DLC that will add these features is going to be a free update released on Wednesday, December 7.

The news was announced out of the blue, via the trailer below, which offers little detail on what the modes are, just a vague mention of duels, free-for-alls, and team fights.

Colosseums in Limgrave, Leyndell, and Caelid will all be activated by the update, although whether there’s any difference between them is unknown.

Many fans have speculated that paid-for DLC might be announced at The Game Awards on Thursday night, which makes the timing of this free update somewhat suspicious.

There are still no direct rumours suggesting a reveal is imminent but dataminers have discovered hints of other new content not directly related to the colosseums.

There are references to new maps, hairstyles, bosses, and ray-tracing in the game, but that’s no guarantee that they’ll be added as DLC or even as a free update.

As in most things, Elden Ring remains tantalisingly opaque as to its future plans and while some kind of announcement on Thursday is possible it’s far from guaranteed.
