Succession star Brian Cox believes that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle experienced ‘trauma’ during their time as working royals.

During Tuesday’s Ripple of Hope Award Gala, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were honoured at the prestigious ceremony for their racial justice and mental health work, and held hands as they arrived on the red carpet for the exclusive bash.

The couple were joined on the night by Alec Baldwin – who was hosting proceedings – as well as Gayle King, Keegan-Michael Key, Don Lemon and the Kennedy family.

Harry and Meghan are currently under the spotlight as the trailer for their Netflix series was released earlier in the week, which documents their controversial exit from the Royal Family in 2020.

One of the shocking claims made from their explosive 2021 Oprah Winfrey tell-all, the pair alleged that unnamed members had ‘concerns and conversations’ about how ‘dark’ the skin of her son Archie would be.

Actor Cox, 74, shared his thoughts over Harry and Meghan’s claims during last night’s event.

‘I don’t know what went on, but something clearly traumatic went on for the pair of them,’ he told Good Morning Britain.

‘I don’t think they made it up, I don’t think it’s false. I think it’s true and should’ve been rectified, and it hasn’t.’

Host Baldwin also praised the couple for dealing with media scrutiny.

‘I was kind of shocked for them to come here and do this,’ he said.

‘To handle difficult circumstances in the press without having too much difficulty.’

The official synopsis of Harry and Meghan’s tell-all reads: ‘In an unprecedented and in-depth documentary series, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex share the other side of their high-profile love story.

‘Across six episodes, the series explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution.

‘With commentary from friends and family, most of whom have never spoken publicly before about what they witnessed, and historians who discuss the state of the British Commonwealth today and the royal family’s relationship with the press, the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other.

‘From the critically-acclaimed, two-time Academy Award-nominated and Emmy-winning director Liz Garbus, Harry & Meghan is a never-before-seen look at one of the most-discussed couples in history.’

Harry & Meghan volume one lands on Netflix on Thursday.
