Rebel Wilson has slammed the gossip columnist who she accused of threatening to out her as gay while on stage at the 2022 AACTA Awards.

The comedian, 42, was presenting an award during the ceremony on Wednesday in Sydney, Australia when she made a subtle dig at the Sydney Morning Herald journalist Andrew Hornery.

Rebel clashed with the reporter earlier this year after he contacted her asking her to speak out about her relationship with Ramona Agruma publicly for the first time, ‘giving her two days to comment’.

With the story in the offing, the star chose to come out on social media instead and to open up about her sexuality.

In the middle of her speech at the AACTA Awards, which was intended to introduce nominees at the awards show, the film star added: ‘There has been big things that have happened in my life this year, like big changes.

‘I switched from dairy to soy. I thought I should tell you guys now and get the jump on the Sydney Morning Herald.’

Rebel announced her relationship with entrepreneur Ramona on June 10 via her Instagram account.

Alongside a snap of the pair getting close, the Pitch Perfect actress confirmed she was romantically involved with Romana when she typed: ‘I thought I was searching for a Disney Prince… but maybe what I really needed all this time was a Disney Princess #loveislove [sic].’

Not long after her Instagram post appeared, it was revealed that Rebel went public about her relationship and her sexuality in order to beat a ‘scoop’ that was set to run in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The journalist then claimed Rebel had unfairly interfered in her ‘gazumping’ of his story by speaking out on her own terms.

Andrew said that he had contacted the actress’s representatives to inform them of his plans to write a piece about her budding romance, giving them a couple of days to comment in response.

He wrote as a reaction to his outreach: ‘Big mistake. Wilson opted to gazump the story.’

In the wake of the columnist’s words, he faced a wave of backlash as claims flew in accusing Andrew of trying to ‘out’ the Hollywood star.

The Australian journalist was also slammed for complaining over Rebel’s taking of control with regards to the narrative of her own life.

Defending his actions, he penned: ‘It was with an abundance of caution and respect that this media outlet emailed Rebel Wilson’s representatives on Thursday morning, giving her two days to comment on her new relationship with LA leisure wear designer Ramona Agruma, before publishing a single word.’

Metro.co.uk contacted Andrew and Rebel’s representatives for comment.
