The Traitors star Tom Elderfield has opened up on whether he and co-star Alex Gray are still in a relationship, and how they ended up on the show together.

On Wednesday’s episode, the 24-year-old magician was banished from the group, but revealed himself to be a Faithful, which his actress girlfriend Alex, 26, had known all along.

Suspicions grew when Tom shockingly revealed he and Alex had been in a secret relationship to the rest of the group, in dramatic scenes which left many of the contestants convinced either Tom or Alex must be lying to them.

When Tom revealed the big secret, he had said: ‘We came in here as a couple, to try and find Traitors, we tried to come apart separately, hear different stories.’

Alex later recalled the drama, which had co-star Matt weeping from the lies, as ‘one of the worst days of her life’.

But, it turns out it wasn’t just the contestants who were kept in the dark over their relationship, and when applying, the production company sent the pair through to the show individually, before discovering they were a couple.

In an exclusive chat with Metro.co.uk, Tom revealed how the pair applied for the show despite knowing that contestants who know one another can’t apply, after he was originally meant to star on The Circle.

‘Last year, we were both working in Mexico doing social media videos and stuff, and so I flew over from Mexico to possibly take part in The Circle for a month and then I flew back and that didn’t happen,’ he began.

‘But they then got in contact with me, while people were reaching out to Alex, but I know the rules say people that know each other can’t apply, and it was actually someone who said “Can you both apply and we’ll see how it goes” and he told me they sent us both through as individuals.

‘And the BBC, once they made their final selection they did actually select us both individually on our own merit and they were like, oh by the way, these two are a couple and then it’s like how exciting.’

He added it was a ‘mutual’ decision to keep their relationship a secret from the other contestants.

Tom continued: ‘It looks very much like it was Alex’s idea, and it makes it look like I’m really uncomfortable with it, but we thought if we went in there as a couple that’s unfair and they’ll kill us out straight away, we have to keep it a secret, there wasn’t an option.

‘People may feel for Matt because it looks like he’s been played along but ultimately like you’re watching it and obviously Alex is going to get hit on, she’s gorgeous, but the thing is she’s just being her lovely friendly self, she wasn’t like leading people down the wrong path or trying to bring Matt in, he brought himself in basically, so we just felt confident in each other that we had to do it like that.’

Tom elsewhere confirmed that the couple are still together, telling us: ‘By some miracle, yes, we’re all good, we’re always good.’

Following Tom’s banishment, we’ll have to wait and see whether Alex can make it to the end without him, or whether she’ll be murdered or evicted from the game.

The Traitors continues on Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One and is available to watch on iPlayer.
