The creators of one of the most beloved indie games of recent years have finally announced a new game at The Game Awards and it looks great.

It’s four years now since Celeste become an indie darling, celebrated not just for its precision platforming but its unexpectedly touching storytelling.

Technically, Maddy Makes Games announced Earthblade last year, but only via a vague bit of artwork. It’s not a sequel but a brand new 2D platformer that still seems to have a lot in common with the previous game.

There’s very little information beyond what you can discern from the trailer but there’s clearly a lot more exploration this time, more detailed graphics, and what looks like Metroidvania elements.

Officially, the developer is Extremely OK Games – we don’t pretend to understand the distinction, but Celeste’s Maddy Thorson is the head of R&D, so we assume it’s all roughly the same group of people.

Whoever’s making it, it’s described as a ‘2D explor-action game in a seamless pixel art world’, where you play as Névoa – an ‘enigmatic child of Fate returning at long last to Earth.’

Seamless exploration is promised, along with ‘challenging combat’ and ‘countless mysteries’ that allow you to ‘piece together the Earth’s fractured history.’

There’s not much character interaction in the trailer, but what is there does seem fun – we like the knowing wink at the start – and Celeste’s quality instantly earns the team the benefit of the doubt from us.

The only bad news is that the game’s not going to be out until 2024, so it’s unclear when we might see it again and get some more details.
