Lucy Spraggan has relived the pain of writing a song about her late friend Caroline Flack.

In an exclusive interview with Guilty Pleasures, the singer shared that she pays tribute to the Love Island host on her upcoming record Balance – also the name of her single, out now. Flack died by suicide in February 2020, aged 40.

‘There’s a song called Caroline. It ruined me to sing it, ruined me to hear it, ruined me to write it,’ recalled 31-year-old Lucy.

The two met in 2012 while Lucy was taking part in The X Factor, which Caroline presented the Xtra Factor spin-off to.

‘That was a weird time in my life, and she was a smiley face, someone who was there being lovely in a place where there’s lots of people who aren’t.’

Lucy quit the ITV talent show due to illness, it was announced at the time, and next year she will release her memoir Process detailing, among other matters, her X Factor experience.

‘Every day I’m like, “F***ing hell, now it’s available to pre-order!” It’s big… it’s f***ing huge, and it’s stuff I haven’t spoken about for a decade,’ she added.

‘I had to get to a position where I was like, “Well, this is my whole life.” It scares the s*** out of me, but there we are.’

Coming full circle, Lucy recently signed a deal with X Factor boss Simon Cowell’s new publishing company.

She had never met 63-year-old Si, who was busy judging the American version of The X Factor when she auditioned.

‘He loves my songwriting and wants me to grow as a songwriter as well as an artist. It’s been really nice,’ she explained.

‘Funnily enough, I got talking to Simon because of my book… and me and him became fast pals, which is what we are now.
