Martin Clunes strangely enough broke the news of Queen Elizabeth II’s death to a tribe in the South Pacific.

The Doc Martin actor, 61, shared the unusual tale during an appearance on Thursday’s episode of Lorraine, where he was interviewed about his upcoming final outing as the grump doctor.

Martin had been filming the ITV series in the remote Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea when it was announced the late monarch had died aged 96 on September 8.

Unsurprisingly, there was little cellular service on the islands, although the occasional 3G connection wafted through.

‘In the middle of the night I got a text from my daughter to tell me that the Queen had died,’ Martin said.

‘What a strange way to find out,’ noted Lorraine.

‘It was really weird, and I told the chief of our village and slowly over the next couple of days chiefs and elders from other tribes and villages came to offer their condolences and their chiefly respects,’ Martin added.

‘That’s influence, isn’t it?’

Making a dig at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix documentary, which aired its highly anticipated second part today, Martin added: ‘So there’s a story to counter the other ones.’

Doc Martin is returning for one final hurrah this festive period, with a Christmas special.

The main series ended on a high with nearly six million viewers tuning in to find out whether the Doc would accept a prestigious post in London, or stay in Portwenn.

Portwenn is full of festive fun, until Doc has the grotto closed down because he fears Santa has something contagious, upsetting the children, including his own son James (Elliott Blake).

While awaiting the results of the tests to find out why Leonard (Santa, played by Ron Cook) is so itchy the Doc tells him he cannot be Santa until they have the diagnosis.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
