Laura Kuenssberg left viewers of her weekly Sunday show baffled when she interviewed the editor of The Sun but failed to mention the Jeremy Clarkson article which has sparked humongous uproar.

On Saturday, The Sun published an article written by The Grand Tour presenter which included a scathing attack on Meghan Markle.

In it, Clarkson said he felt ‘sorry’ for ‘glove puppet’ Prince Harry.

He went on: ‘Meghan, though, is a different story. I hate her.

‘Not like I hate Nicola Sturgeon or Rose West. I hate her on a cellular level.’

He continued: ‘At night, I’m unable to sleep as I lie there, grinding my teeth and dreaming of the day when she is made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while the crowds chant, “Shame!” and throw lumps of excrement at her.’

Countless celebrities have condemned the remarks, while even Clarkson’s daughter Emily stressed that she ‘stands against everything’ that he wrote.

Victoria Newton was on Kuenssberg’s panel alongside Susanna Reid and Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury, discussing front pages of the newspapers which highlighted the ongoing strikes and the continued reaction to Harry and Meghan’s documentary, particularly focusing on the couple’s relationship with the press.

It would have seemed like ample time to address Clarkson’s column, but alas, not a peep.

Viewers were baffled that Clarkson’s piece didn’t come at all. LBC presenter James O’Brien said he was ‘staggered’ that Newton wasn’t pressed on it during her appearance on Sunday.

Another tweeted: ‘I do not get why @bbclaurak had the editor of the Sun sitting right in front of her and neither she nor any of the other panellists for that matter challenged her over Clarkson’s article.’

I’d like to know how the editor of The Sun managed to appear on @bbclaurak this morning without a single question about the hate-filled column published by that newspaper 2 days ago.

I don’t watch her show but whoever was producing Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday allowed an interview to take place with the editor of the Sun in which she was not asked about publishing incitement to hate from Jeremy Clarkson. Editor & producer of that programme failed in their duty

Others said Kuenssberg and her editors ‘failed I their duty’ not to ask Newton about the article, and called the interview ‘cosy’.

At the time of writing, Clarkson is yet to address the backlash.

Metro.co.uk has contacted a spokesperson for Laura Kuenssberg and BBC for comment on this story.

Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg airs Sundays at 9am on BBC One.
