The Specials’ lead singer Terry Hall has died aged 63, his bandmates have confirmed.
The reggae group announced his death in a statement shared on social media.
‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing, following a brief illness, of Terry, our beautiful friend, brother and one of the most brilliant singers, songwriters and lyricists this country has ever produced,’ they tweeted.
‘Terry was a wonderful husband and father and one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine of souls. His music and his performances encapsulated the very essence of life… the joy, the pain, the humour, the fight for justice, but mostly the love.’
The statement concluded: ‘He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him and leaves behind the gift of his remarkable music and profound humanity. Terry often left the stage at the end of The Specials’ life-affirming shows with three words… “Love Love Love”.’

Hall was initially the frontman of The Coventry Automatics for one year in 1977, with the group then becoming known as The Specials in early 1979.
The group rose to fame in the UK that same year when BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel played their debut single Gangsters on his show.
The Specials then went on to release their debut album, aptly titled The Specials, which contained the hits A Message to You, Rudy and Too Much Too Young.
Over the course of his career, Hall released two solo studio albums.
He also collaborated with many artists including the likes of Bananarama, the Lightning Seeds, Sinéad O’Connor, Stephen Duffy, Dub Pistols, Gorillaz, and Lily Allen.
