Lily Allen admits that being the child of famous and influential parents has afforded her ‘privilege’ and ‘so many opportunities’ amid the ongoing ‘nepotism babies’ debate.

The Smile singer had earlier weighed into the trending topic on social media, discussing the fame and success of children born into already influential families.

Among the names brought up in the debate are Lily-Rose Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis; Dakota Johnson, daughter of Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson; and Lily herself, who is daughter of actor Keith Allen and film producer Alison Owen.

Lily has enjoyed a hugely successful music career, which has seen her win a Brit Award, while her brother Alfie Allen has carved out an acting career with roles in shows such as Game of Thrones and John Wick.

After sharing her thoughts on the topic of ‘nepo babies’, the 37-year-old returned to Twitter to acknowledge how beneficial her own upbringing and connections has been in furthering her career.

‘Look, I seem to have riled people up with my comments about nepo babies,’ she tweeted on Tuesday evening.

Look, I seem to have riled people up with my comments about nepo babies. I am nearly 40 years of age and am more than happy, in fact I think it’s important to disclose what a privileged upbringing I’ve had and how that has created so many opportunities for me,

‘I am nearly 40 years of age and am more than happy, in fact I think it’s important to disclose what a privileged upbringing I’ve had and how that has created so many opportunities for me.’

She added: ‘I actually don’t consider many people in the industry my friends, certainly none that I feel the need to protect.’

Hours before, the Littlest Things singer had hit out at critics of the so-called ‘nepo babies’, writing on Twitter: ‘The nepo babies y’all should be worrying about are the ones working for legal firms, the ones working for banks, and the ones working in politics.

‘If we’re talking about real world consequences and robbing people of opportunity. BUT that’s none of my business.’

She followed up in a separate tweet: ‘And before you come at me for being a nepo baby myself, I will be the first to tell you that I literally deserve nothing.’

One of the singer’s followers explained that the issue many critics seem to have is that some ‘nepo babies’ appear to lack ‘self awareness’ of their privilege.

The pop star and actress responded: ‘In childhood we crave stability and love, nurturing, we don’t care about money or proximity to power yet. Many of the nepo babies are starved of these basic things in childhood as their parents are probably narcissistic.

‘And entertainment business is not parent friendly eg.. Touring/ months away shooting. It can be hard to see one’s own privilege when you’re still processing childhood trauma, and a lot of these kids haven’t figured that out yet.’
