Channel 4’s alternative Christmas message is returning with a twist… as the audio will be generated entirely by artificial intelligence.

The annual broadcast – which will run after the King’s annual Christmas message at 3pm – will see the robot reflect on the highs and lows of 2022.

During the special Ameca, one of the world’s most advanced robots will also respond to questions about humans as the highly-skilled machine is capable of ultra-realistic reactions and can smile or frown, blink, scrunch its nose and even wink.

She is also set to human-kind should be ‘neither happy nor sad’ about the past year and ‘take it as a learning opportunity, a chance to change the way we think about the world and a reminder to help those in need whenever we can.’

Channel 4’s chief content officer, Ian Katz, said: ‘As we look to a future in which Artificial Intelligence is set to have an increasingly prominent role in our lives, Ameca’s Alternative Christmas Message is a vivid illustration of both the power and limitations of this technology.

‘Despite Ameca’s remarkably lifelike facial expressions, I suspect most viewers will come away reassured that humans are not about to be displaced by AI robots any time soon.’

The exact details of the King’s speech have not yet been revealed, although it is expected that he will talk about the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II.

Historian and author Jeremy Archer told OK! magazine: ‘He’ll talk about how positive she was and how inclusive she was. It will be solemn and reflective, but it will show gratitude for her reign, her life and all the things she’s achieved.’

Queen Elizabeth II – who died on September 8 this year – used her last Christmas Day speech in 2021, to reflect on the life of her husband, The Duke of Edinburgh, who died on April 9, 2021.

She said: ‘Although it’s a time of great happiness and good cheer for many, Christmas can be hard for those who have lost loved ones. This year, especially, I understand why.

‘But for me, in the months since the death of my beloved Philip, I have drawn great comfort from the warmth and affection of the many tributes to his life and work – from around the country, the Commonwealth and the world…and as much as I and my family miss him, I know he would want us to enjoy Christmas.’

Channel 4’s Alternative Christmas Message will air on Christmas Day at 5.25pm on Channel 4 and All 4.
